This week, our In Focus section reviews a report released last month by the U.S. Govern-ment Accountability Office (GAO) on the performance of private investment (PI) nursing homes compared with other for-profit nursing homes and non-profit nursing homes. Given Medicare and Medicaid rate reductions that threaten to pressure profit margins, as well as ongoing consolidation in the space by private owners, we felt the GAO’s analysis was a timely evaluation of the differences in quality and efficiency across ownership types.
